After rushing around, she arrived late and casually found a small inn to stay in as night fell.
Su Fu was arranged to stay in the room at the far end of the second floor, while Lin Yuesheng was arranged to stay on the outermost side, with the old lady and a group of servants in between.
After a quick wash, Su Fu turned off the light and went to sleep, but since she crossed over, her sleep had become very shallow.
Whispers came from outside the door, and Su Fu didn't intend to listen, but she couldn't help but hear her own name intermittently.
She glanced at Xiao Chun, who was sleeping in the outer room, and got up alone, quietly approaching the door barefoot.
"Can we do this? She's been accompanied by people all the way, it might not be easy to act halfway." A man outside whispered.
"What should we do then? Just let her return to the capital in glory? If the old lady finds out, she'll probably kill us." The speaker was the leading old lady from the daytime. Su Fu frowned slightly. The old lady they mentioned was her stepmother, as her mother had passed away when she was young, leaving her alone. Later, her father remarried, and although she was the legitimate daughter, she lived worse off than the average illegitimate daughter. Otherwise, she wouldn't have hurriedly married her honest but impoverished father.
"What should we do?" the man continued.
The old lady hesitated for a moment before saying, "Anyway, she's going to be handed over to someone. There are other people staying in this small inn. Let's not act on her tonight. You take this sedative and make Lin Yuesheng faint, so he can't keep up tomorrow."
With that, the two seemed to reach an agreement and quietly left, but the old lady kept scratching her hands and muttering, "I don't know what's wrong, my hands are itching so much today..."
Su Fu gritted her teeth. When there was no more movement outside, she stood up and saw that two small holes had been poked in the window, presumably they were preparing to attack her, but something unexpected happened in the middle.
With a hint of coldness at the corner of her mouth, Su Fu carefully opened the door and looked outside. The old lady and the man from earlier seemed to have already thrown the sedative into Lin Yuesheng's room and gone back to sleep.
Su Fu looked at the empty corridor, intending to check on Lin Yuesheng, but as she walked not far, she heard a man's low, hoarse roar from the adjacent room, as if it was the struggle of someone on the brink of death, filled with despair.
She froze, turned to leave, but it seemed that the person in the room had noticed her, and before she could speak, a gust of cold wind swept in, and she was covered and taken back into the room.
She seemed to hear her own rapid heartbeat. Although she had died once, she couldn't help but tremble slightly now.
"What did you hear?"
There was another man opposite her. His voice was low and hoarse, as if he hadn't slept in a long time.
"I didn't hear anything," Su Fu was released and quickly gasped for air, leaning against the nearby table.
The man who had grabbed her walked to the side and whispered, "Master, she's trembling."
Upon hearing this, Su Fu's hands also tightened, and before the man could speak, she said, "Who are you people, and why did you grab me? My father is the magistrate of this county." She smelled a faint scent of aloeswood on the man, indicating that he was not an ordinary bandit. Mentioning her father would not anger him, but rather make him more cautious.
"The magistrate of this county?" the man snorted coldly. "He's already dead..."
