Chapter 8: There is no danger and no danger

Meng Jinglun often followed Meng's mother to Xiafu as a child and remembered Anran and Ansheng, the two sisters, well. When he heard this, he looked surprised and asked, "Ansheng? Why are you dressed like this? What are you doing in this brothel?"

Ansheng furrowed her brows slightly and said, "I took a risk and sneaked out from the mansion specifically to find you. I have something important to tell you."

"Find me? What could be so urgent? Did my family offend her in some way that displeased her?"

Meng Jinglun was truly in the dark, and Ansheng's tense heart finally relaxed.

"It seems that Meng gege doesn't know about the incident where my stepmother, Li, replaced Ziyu to marry. Right?"

Meng Jinglun was completely puzzled.

Ansheng then quietly recounted the whole story to Meng Jinglun, who listened with righteous indignation.

"This is outrageous! It's your sister who I am engaged to, not Xueshi. How could she favor Ziyu like this? When I go back, I will report this to my parents and have a serious talk with that scheming Xueshi. Her daughter is so ruthless, disregarding sisterly affection. I will never marry her."

Ansheng thought that Meng's mother knew the truth, and after Meng Jinglun returned to the mansion, there would inevitably be a dispute, and she didn't know who would persuade whom. She smiled mischievously and said to Meng Jinglun, "Meng gege, I have a way, but I don't know if you are willing to endure it for now."

Meng Jinglun chuckled, "You are still so mischievous, but go ahead, what can trouble a man like me?"

Ansheng lowered her voice even more, leaned in, and whispered a few words.

Meng Jinglun's face lit up, and he nodded repeatedly.

"No wonder you pressed me to the ground and made a fuss earlier, and had someone lift me onto the carriage. I thought you were trying to extort something, but it turns out you had everything planned."

Ansheng slyly blinked, "The outburst just now may have already attracted attention. What happens next can only be left to Meng gege's planning."

Meng Jinglun thought to himself how clever Ansheng was. His fall was just an accident, but this future sister-in-law could scheme and plan every step so meticulously. It seemed that he must not provoke her in the future.

After careful planning, Ansheng got off the carriage halfway and hurried back to Xiafu. It was already past dinner time, and the red lanterns at the door were as bright as daylight. The guests had already dispersed, but the mansion was still bustling with servants coming and going.

Ansheng hid in the shadows of the lanterns, scanning the area. The gatekeeper was sitting at the door drinking tea, guarding the entrance. She was worried about how to sneak into the mansion without being noticed.

She was anxious for Anran, who was always honest and might be exposed by the cunning Xue. She hoped that Xueshi would find out and inform her.

Ansheng was usually good at causing trouble and fearless in the face of Xia Ziyu's bullying. Anran always took the blame for her, enduring the scolding. Ansheng felt guilty, as her sharp edges had been worn down.

She was worried that if the truth was revealed, Anran would be punished again. She couldn't find a good opportunity, feeling like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Across the street, a grand carriage stopped at the gate of Xiafu. The coachman got off, and a graceful girl, Xia Anzheng, stepped down from the carriage, helping an elderly lady with white hair.

Ansheng's heart leaped with joy. It was none other than her grandmother, Lady Qi, who had two sons. Her eldest son, Xia's father, held the position of Left Assistant Minister of Justice. Lady Qi usually lived with her eldest son's family and had come early to oversee the celebration of her second son's marriage.

The gatekeeper had already rushed into the mansion to report, and Xia's father and Xueshi hurried out to greet them, kneeling in respect.

After a few pleasantries, the group entered the mansion, and Ansheng boldly followed them inside.

She kept her head down, staring at her toes, and as soon as she entered, she turned and tried to slip back to her courtyard along the wall.

Xueshi, with sharp eyes, noticed her and was about to reprimand her.

"Ansheng? What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be resting in bed with a fever?"

Ansheng's heart skipped a beat, but she couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed that Anran had cleverly handled the situation.

She raised her head and bowed respectfully to Xueshi and Lady Qi, saying, "I heard suddenly that grandmother had arrived, and I was so overjoyed that I immediately went out to greet her. When I got close, I remembered that I had a fever and could only bow from a distance, not daring to approach."

Xueshi looked at her suspiciously, "What kind of attire is this? It's not proper."

Ansheng timidly took a step back and murmured, "I... I was sweating heavily just now and grabbed this dress in a hurry. I didn't realize it was a servant's dress."

Mrs. Qi greeted Ansheng with a smile and affectionately patted her on the head, "Ansheng has grown up so much, and it's rare for her to be so filial. Don't be so strict with her. If you want to discipline your daughter, do it behind closed doors, don't embarrass me in front of others."

Apart from her sister, it had been a long time since anyone had treated Ansheng with such kindness. Suddenly, a warmth surged in her heart, and she blinked, her eyes immediately turning red.

"Thank you, grandmother. Ansheng has been impulsive."

Her voice choked with emotion, and Mrs. Qi's heart was suddenly touched.

Xue, clearly sensing Mrs. Qi's dislike towards her, nodded obediently while coldly reprimanding Ansheng, the culprit, "Since you know you have a fever, why don't you leave? What are you doing standing here?"

Ansheng lowered her eyes, bid farewell to Mrs. Qi, and quickly left the courtyard.

As Anran watched the sky darken, she was eagerly waiting, feeling anxious. When she saw Ansheng confidently returning from the front yard, she was surprised.

Even the maid looked at her in surprise, "When did the Second Miss leave the courtyard? How did I not know?"

Ansheng put on an air of authority and said, "I heard that grandmother had arrived, so I naturally went out to greet her. Since mother didn't blame me, do I still need to report to you?"

The maid, teased and exposed, apologized and obediently retreated.

The two sisters walked back to their room hand in hand. Ansheng lifted the curtain and carefully pulled out the hedgehog from under the blanket, throwing it on the floor.

"It seems that we've successfully passed the test today."

"Thanks to your alertness." Anran couldn't wait to ask, "Why did it take you so long?"

Ansheng, with a smug look, blinked at Anran, "The plan has succeeded."

She then recounted the recent events to Anran in great detail, speaking animatedly and vividly.

Anran's emotions fluctuated between joy and worry, like waves rising and falling. Finally, when Ansheng paused, she anxiously and shyly asked, "Is he seriously injured?"

Ansheng casually replied, "It's just a minor external injury. I guarantee he'll be as lively as a dragon tomorrow. You can rest assured, sister."

Anran blushed at the teasing and lightly scoffed.
